Ben Folds and his piano made my day

2002-06-22 @ 12:43 a.m.

I just got back from an aweseome Ben Folds concert at City Market in Kansas City. I went with Lee, Karl, and Andrew. We got there in plenty of time to get some food and then sat down for a good hour or so before they finally let us in. While waiting we made fun of people wearing 96.5 bumper stickers on their clothing, guys trying to parallel park without success, and this really REALLY fat guy we nicknamed Fat Albert/Bastard because we couldn't decide if he was black or white. When we finally got in, we got a pretty good place near the stage. Looking around, I saw a ton of people from KU and other places that were there. During the concert I stood next to Madeleine's big sister Aubrey and her friends. So we were with good company the entire time, which makes any concet pretty cool.

The opening act was this one guy on a guitar who called himself 'The Divine Comedy' and we really liked him...for an opener. He was pretty funny and knew that most of his songs were crap to us. Supposedly they are popular in the UK.

So after that and waiting for about another half hour after he left, Ben finally came on. He played a pretty cool set that ranged from all of his albums (I mean including Ben Folds Five) and he played everything SOLO! He made it look so easy and he did such a great job with it like always. He made the crowd immitate instruments for certain songs and different parts of the chorus. He also had the guy from Divine Comedy come up and play 'Mess' with him. I bet it must be really hard to play everywhere around the globe on a tour and be so energetic with his music, but Ben Folds does it really well. He just gets into it and then he just puts everything into it so that when the show is over, he looks like a freaking mess and pissed off. Oh yeah, like always he plays Song For the Dumped at the end and he did it tonight, but this time he played it in a minor key. That was so creative and the crowd loved it. When the show was over we were all dead with our legs cramped and dying of thirst. On the drive home it was pretty difficult to stop and find some place to get something to drink, but eventually everything worked out. I'm so glad I went.

Well, I have about five hours of sleeping freedom before I have to be awake to slave on dishes for 9 hours at Perkins. I heard the weekends are hell, so I guess I'd better just suck it up and try not to get pissed off. I'll tell you what though...going to the concert may just make everything all right.
