I'll figure it out when I get there

2002-07-23 @ 9:17 a.m.

Since work was really slow yesterday, I spent a lot of time surfing the internet. I checked out the Journal World sports page and found out that a swimmer that I used to coach in summer league had set a team record for his age group in the 100 backstroke. I coached this kid about two years ago when he was 8, so now he's ten and is close to Zone cuts in about four events! When he started with me, he had never swam before, but I knew that he would be a good swimmer and I encouraged him to keep swimming with the club team when the summer season ended. He told me that he liked playing basketball too, but wanted to continue swimming instead. His mom told me that he wanted to keep doing it because he looked up to me, which made me feel good. Seeing that he's very successful in the sport now makes me even happier.

I had some other swimmers in my group that continued swimming with the Aquahawks club program after the summer season too. I think they continued because they had a good time while they were with me. So, now I think that I could be a good coach and recruiter for a high school swim team if I wanted to. Good thing I want to be a teacher!

Last night Madeleine asked me where I saw myself in 10 years. I said that I saw myself teaching, but didn't know where and that was it. I know what I want to do now in my life, which is good, but where to do it and the further detail about it will have to wait. I think its that way with most people. For instance, my dad knew he was going to be a doctor when he was a senior in high school, but had no idea his first job would be in crappy Waterloo, Iowa, be married to my mom and have three kids. He thought he would be married to his high school girlfriend and probably live somewhere in Florida. So, what I'm saying is that I'm not going to think too much about my future. I'll just carry a rough outline for guidence.
