Infamous Nicknames

2002-08-23 @ 10:04 a.m.

It's nice not having class until 12:30. I just got up about 20 minutes ago to the painter clanging his ladder on our house, but I don't mind...I've slept enough.

I've been really tired lately. Last night I planned to pick Madeleine up at 5:45 to get our band uniforms. However, I took a huge nap and didn't manage to get out of bed until 6:30 or so. Honestly, I just felt like crap the entire night. I guess I'm still sleepy, but hopefully thats because I just woke up.

I have yet another nickname to add to my long list. The name is Cito. Madeleine named me this because I think I said I'm sorry for over-sleeping too much or something, so it sounds like 'pobrecito' (spanish for 'sorry'...I hope everyone knew that anyway). So yeah, add that to the list. Keegan, the bass line leader and assistant section leader, told me on wednesday that he thought my nickname of 'Smee' was probably his best nickname he has given yet.

OK, maybe I didn't explain the origins of Smee yet. Though all of you band people who read this already know it, I'll just explain it to the novices. I got this nickname last year after I wore a pirate hat to drumline rehearsal. Soon after, whenever I would bring the hat to rehearsals, people would just randomly shout 'ARRRRR' at me, so I would shout 'ARRRRR' back at them. So not long after that it seemed that everyone in the entire band was caught up in the 'ARRRRR' chants. So thats how Keegan named me Smee (after captain Hook's sidekick in 'Hook,' starring Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams). The 'ARRRRR' calls greatly annoyed our band director, Dr. Oliver. On a trip to the game at Colorado last year, the KU football team was about to lose again and the CU fans were filing out past us since we were pretty much at the end of the stadium. Most of them, like most stupid opposing fans, stopped and said some stupid shit that was supposed to hurt our feelings or something. So I just decided to shout 'ARRRRR' to every CU fan that passed. Dr. Oliver was standing nearby and after about 150 or so 'ARRRRR's' turned around and yelled 'whoever says that stupid 'ARRRRR' thing again, I'm going to have to deal with them right down here on the field.' So, yeah, that was that. When I decided to come back this year, I was over at Keith the drumline director's house getting music on tuesday night. Keith said that Dr. Oliver told him that I could come back on one condition...that I would not say that stupid 'ARRRRR' thing at all this year. So, looks like I'll have to find something new.

I guess tonight I'm going to Keegan's first party of the year. Should be fun as long as more people than last year show up.

Well, I feel more awake than I have been the entire week now. Time to get ready for school.
